About a year ago, I did a post comparing Google Chrome to Safari here on Fancy Show Tech. Now, one year later, Chrome has gone through some major interface rehauls both front and back end as well as Safari and I thought I’d do a post touching on this subject yet again as our original post on this was a very popular one and I thought you guys would benefit from touching back on this.
Peacekeeper Tests

The tests for Google Chrome (left) and Safari (right).
Since I last tested Google Chrome and Safari a year ago, the Peacekeeper test has been changed somewhat and the scoring system is somewhat different from when I did my post a year ago on Google Chrome and Safari but Google Chrome still prevails over Safari. I noticed while testing Safari some of the HTML5 video animation was very choppy and non-fluid while Chrome animated the video flawlessly and you could tell it was the most capable browser in that regard.
Performance
One year after testing both Chrome and Safari, I’d have to say that Chrome still has the best performance. It’s noticable in even regular daily activities that Chrome is much more efficient than Safari. It takes much more to crash Chrome than Safari from what I’ve noticed. This is somewhat due to the fact of how Chrome manages its tabs. In Chrome, each tab is a seperate process so if one tab crashes it doesn’t affect the whole browser. Safari, on the other hand, is more traditional in the fact that each tab in Safari isn’t a process and thus, the whole browser can crash even if just one tab acts up.
Looks

The New Tab screen shown in Safari (left) and Google Chrome (right).
As for the looks and design of the browser, both browsers are pretty slick. In Chrome, when you open a new tab, you can switch between a screen showing the most viewed websites in a grid style and a screen showing what “apps” you have installed on Chrome so far. Safari, however, is a bit different. On the new tab screen in Safari, there are 2 options for “Top Sites” and “History”. The top sites in Safari is similar to the most viewed websites section in Google Chrome except it is a bit fancier looking than Chrome’s. The History section, however, lets you view your browser history in a cover flow format. I quite like the design element in both browsers, but Chrome in my opinion both has the best and the simplest design. The design is your decision to judge though.
The Verdict
Winner: Google Chrome
The winner, even after a year, is still Google Chrome. It offers the best interface as well as being the most efficient browser currently out. Chrome won by far, completely blowing the slowly aging Safari. You can download Chrome for free here.

Today, MegaUpload was shut down by the Federal Government.
The MegaUpload Logo – Photo Credit: Wikipedia/MegaUpload LTD.
MegaUpload, the insanely popular file sharing website, was shut down by the Federal Government today after they arrested Kim Schmitz (otherwise known as “Kim Dotcom”) and 3 other MegaUpload employees on grounds of ”violating piracy laws” in New Zealand. Although lots of traffic that is on MegaUpload is perfectly legitimate, there is definitely a large amount of pirated/illegal files hosted on the service.
After releasing the “MegaUpload Song” video in December 2010 that features Kim Schmitz as well as several well-known celebrities including Kanye West, will.i.am, Jamie Foxx, Chris Brown and more, the video had some controversy because it had been taken down from YouTube by Universal Music Group shortly after it was released but YouTube reinstated the video shortly after.
Kim Schmitz, the founder and former CEO of MegaUpload, has been known as a cyber criminal in the past, having a reputation of credit card scams, hacking, and embezzlement. This makes it seem like it could very well be sure about what the government is saying against MegaUpload, but only time will tell in this case.
As of 3:40 PM (GMT -5) on January 19, 2012, the MegaUpload website is still down, and probably will be until this case is sorted out in Federal court.
What do you think of this case? Post it in the comments below.

Today, we are announcing that we are blacking out our website on January 18th to protest SOPA/PIPA.
If you didn’t know, SOPA is a proposed act in Senate/Congress that threatens the internet by making websites such as YouTube and Twitter liable for what their users put on the site, and thus makes it so they can be taken down instantly. PIPA is a similar act that is also passing through the Senate and Congress. In order to spread awareness about SOPA and PIPA, we are taking our website dark for the day of January 18, 2012. We hope this doesn’t affect any of your plans in visiting our website and we hope this helps the movement against SOPA and PIPA.
Thanks for cooperating during this time and Fancy Show Tech does not support SOPA or PIPA.
What do you think? Post it in the comments!

Today, Target confirmed they’re adding Apple mini stores, similar to the ones currently installed inside Best Buys.
An example of one of the Apple Mini Stores currently in Best Buy – Photo Credit: Best Buy Canada
As you know, for a few years now Best Buy has had the Apple Mini Store experience and it has worked out very well for them and for Apple. Giving consumers a wonderful enviroment for shopping for Apple computers, and differentiating them from the PCs, this has worked out very well for both companies. Apparently now, Target wants in on this success. Target said they will be rolling out these Apple mini stores to 25 of their retail locations this year.
Target spokesperson Dustee Jenkins described these Mini Stores as “expanded displays” of Apple merchandise but didn’t say exactly how it will exactly work or if there would be any Apple-like design influence on the mini stores.
Target already sells some Apple products, like the iPod and iPhone but adding the Apple mini stores may mean Target will be selling Macs. Target has not said for sure though if they will be selling Macs but they probably will seeing how they’re adding the Apple Mini Stores full on.
What do you think of Target adding these Apple mini stores to their stores? Post it in the comments below.

Today, Apple announced their upcoming Education Event happening on January 19 in New York City.
This is the invitation to Apple’s event in NYC – Photo Credit: Apple
Apple, as you know, usually hosts its annual keynotes in Silicon Valley each year but this is an unusual seeing the event is both about education and is being hosted in New York City at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Invites for the event were sent to mass media outlets earlier today but Apple hasn’t hinted towards what they are announcing yet other than it is something to do with education.
This event could be about a number of things as education isn’t a normal foray for Apple to be going in to. The iPad is a large player in the education market since its launch in January 2010 and this upheaval is probably driving Apple towards competing more in the education market. Whatever they’re announcing is definitely something aimed towards the education market and will probably not be a real product, like the iPad or iPhone, but something that is digital. Some people, like Clayton Morris say that Apple is hosting the event close to New York because most of the major textbook publishers are headquartered in or near New York City. This points to them possibly announcing some sort of Digital Textbooks at this event. I just have one thing to say: whatever Apple is announcing is either going to be a huge success in education or a total flop. We will have to wait and see what happens at the event.
This is also the first Apple event after the death of co-founder and former CEO, Steve Jobs, in October 2011. This event will start to show how Apple can handle large events without Steve on the front lines. This is good for Apple because it will help them start to mature without Steve there to guide them in the right direction.
Education is a large market and this is a good market for Apple to enter but the success of what they are announcing depends if K12 schools and colleges adopt what they are announcing. If a very low amount of these educational institutions fail to adopt what Apple is announcing, then it will probably flop because schools adopting these products is vital for their exposure to students who may buy Apple products in the future based on the impression they get from using them at school.
What do you think about the NYC event Apple is holding? Please post your thoughts in the comments below.

Today, Polaroid announced a new Android camera at CES.

The Polaroid SC1630 is the latest digital camera from Polaroid. The difference this has from most normal digital cameras is that this runs Android. This camera boasts a 16 megapixel lens, 3x optical zoom, the ability to record HD video, built in WiFi, and a MicroSD slot for storage. The most exciting feature on this camera though is that it runs Android. This supposedly makes it easier to share photos to Facebook and Twitter after taking them. The question is – why?
Android, as you know, is a smartphone operating system developed by Google that, in the past we have mainly seen in phones but is starting to spread to things like Tablets and TVs. A camera though is a bit too far for Android. The built-in UI looks to be a bit clunky compared to most of the Android phones currently on the market and it just doesn’t seem right for a camera. Also, phone cameras are starting to get good enough that you don’t really need a smart-enabled camera like this to share your photos since you will probably have your phone with you anyways. Keep in mind this camera isn’t a phone and it only has built-in WiFi, so you can’t share photos anywhere because there is no 3G. Think of this as a limited iPod Touch with a good lens.
The price is a mystery for now, but this camera is slated to be coming out in 2012. It is also unclear what version of Android it is running but the UI seems to be a custom one made by Polaroid.
What do you think of this new Android camera? Post it in the comments below.
